He Was a Plumber.
Jason Hawes didn't stumble into paranormal investigation from a TV casting call. He built it from a spare room in his Warwick, Rhode Island apartment in 1990 — while working full-time as a Roto-Rooter plumber. That blue-collar grounding is not a backstory. It is the brand.
At 20, after a series of unexplained experiences, Hawes sought out his cousin and paranormal researcher John Zaffis. What followed wasn't a hobby — it was a life's work. By 1995, the Rhode Island Paranormal Society had grown into TAPS — The Atlantic Paranormal Society. The rest, as they say, is television history.
Ghost Hunters premiered on Syfy in October 2004 and ran for 11 seasons and 230 episodes, making it the highest-rated paranormal reality series ever produced. More importantly, it launched an entirely new genre of television — and it did so by doing the opposite of what everyone expected: trying to disprove the haunting first.
“We go in trying to disprove it. If we can't, then we have something.”
— Jason Hawes
Married since 1998, father of six, and still running active investigations through TAPS — all free of charge — Jason Hawes is the rare figure in entertainment who never separated the work from the mission. The YouTube channel isn't a pivot. It's the investigation, uncut.

The Fight for
The Conjuring House
The Perron farmhouse in Burrillville, Rhode Island is the real location that inspired the 2013 horror film The Conjuring. It is one of the most documented paranormal locations in the country — and Jason has been fighting to preserve it.
After the property fell into financial distress, Jason launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $133,000. The owner signed the deed over to Jason. Then a competing buyer acquired the mortgage, and the original owner's sister filed a lawsuit claiming incompetency.
The case is currently in active litigation. The paranormal community is watching. And Jason isn't going anywhere.
Active litigation. A court agreement temporarily halted the competing sale in January 2026. The case remains before the courts as of Q2 2026. Jason continues to monitor and update his community through YouTube and social media.
Never Investigated
Alone
TAPS was never a one-man operation. The people who built it — and keep building it — are among the most credible voices in paranormal investigation.
Steve Gonsalves
One of only three original TAPS members who stayed the full 12-year run of Ghost Hunters. Steve is the technical backbone of the operation and co-stars in Ghost Hunters on Discovery+.
Dave Tango
Core team member across Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters Academy, and Ghost Hunters on Discovery+. Known for his evidence analysis precision and his ability to build rapport with location owners.
Shari DeBenedetti
Joined the team for the revived Ghost Hunters era alongside Jason, Steve, and Dave. Brings a disciplined investigative approach and a background in experiencer outreach.
JV Johnson
Jason's primary media partner. Publisher of TAPS ParaMagazine, organizer of SCARE-A-CON, and co-investigator on Jason's YouTube channel.
John Zaffis
Jason's cousin and the paranormal researcher who guided him at age 20 when the experiences began. One of the most respected figures in paranormal research — and the reason TAPS exists.
